I received Weeds in the Waste by MeghanlynnFTW as part of the Solo But Not Alone 3 bundle and LOVED it.

Weeds in the Waste is a solo storytelling game about tending a garden in a post apocalyptic wasteland.
Determine the state of your wasteland, create your gardener, plant your seeds, and tend your garden as you play through the seasons in the wastes. It is a narrative, storytelling game played using 2d6s and a 6×6 grid, as well as a series of prompts.

Forgive my horrible handwriting.

I used my Village Necromancer character, Tansy, as the character for Weeds in the Waste. In the duet game I’m playing with my friend via snail mail, her character Viv sent Tansy seeds for a garden. Tansy is a new necromancer in a village that has suffered a curse that caused blight, drought, and other issues that is making growing and surviving difficult. This might not have been what the creator of Weeds in the Waste was going for but it fit perfectly. Tansy can now plant these magic seeds from her witch friend and use them as a spell catalyst for healing part of the land.

I did end up winning thanks to a bit of luck. I was worried there for a bit though. If I’d had one unlucky moment or had put a plant in the wrong spot, I would have likely lost and Tansy would have failed at her goals of not only healing the land but of gaining the trust and respect of a village that is wary of having a necromancer living nearby.

5 stars

Weeds in the Waste is imaginative, immersive, and despite being a game that you can play in a short time packs a whole lot of emotion and story. The mechanics are quick to learn and don’t require anything I didn’t already have from playing other games. I plan to come back to it again and again as well as encourage those I’m playing other games with to try it out.

I recommend Weeds in the Waste for fans of Village Witch, Apothecaria, Last Tea Shop, and other magical fantasy solo games
